The one rule

Your payments should never run far ahead of the work done. Most prepayment losses happen when a firm closes or disappears while holding money for work it hasn't done yet. In 2024, renovation had the highest prepayment losses of any industry in Singapore (CASE).

FAQ

How much deposit should I pay for renovation?

CaseTrust-accredited firms cap the initial deposit at 20%. With any firm, keep it as small as possible and tie later payments to completed work.

Should I pay the full amount before handover?

It's safer to hold back a final amount until defects are fixed. Agree this in the contract.

Is escrow available for renovation?

Some renovation platforms offer optional escrow. Ask who holds the money and when it's released.
